Every Christmas I get in the spirit, literally, and buy a big container of egg nog. I’m still not even sure I’ve even had egg nog, but yet, I still get it year after year. Come Christmas morning, I stare it and wonder what will come of it. Instead of dumping it down the drain, I have since started making delicious French Toast with it. Now this is a recipe to get you in the spirit!
We have used leftover French bread, brioche… the key is just dense, and sometimes even slightly stale as it will hold up better on the skillet. The flour is not necessary but it helps make the custard more like a batter.
Ingredients
- 10 thick slices of dense, thick Bread
- 4 Eggs
- 1 cup Eggnog
- 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- Dash of Nutmeg
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 3 tbsp Flour
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- Butter for the skillet
Heat a skillet over medium heat. In a shallow dish, slowly whisk the eggnog into the flour and then slowly whisk in the eggs. Next, add the remaining ingredients, except the bread, and whisk well until everything is well combined. Dip the bread slices in the batter and turn to generously coat both sides. Grease the skillet with butter. Place the bread on to the skillet and cook for a few minutes, until the bottom of the bread starts to get golden brown. Flip and cook the other side of the bread until it too is golden brown. Repeat for each slice of bread.
