Did you know that the state of Wisconsin consumes more than half the world’s brandy? As such, it’s only natural that their most famous drink is a twist on a classic cocktail – the Old Fashioned in Wisconsin does not have whiskey, but brandy. While the reasons are disputed (perhaps more available during prohibition?), Wisconsinites will tell you it’s because it tastes better. And since I’m married to a Wisconsinite and we’re currently in the state, who am I to argue? Cheers!
Ingredients
- 1 Jigger Brandy
- 2 slices of Orange
- 4 Maraschino Cherries
- Small splash of Grenadine
- Sugar Cube
- Few Dashes Angostura Bitters
- Sweet or Sour Topper, such as Sprite/7Up/Squirt or half Lemon-Lime Soda and half Seltzer Water
- Ice
In an old fashioned glass, muddle 1 orange slice, 1 cherry with a little bit of the grenadine juice, the sugar cube and few dashes of the bitters. Add 1 jigger of Brandy and mix. Fill the glass with ice. Top with your soda of choice, such as Sprite or a mix of soda and seltzer water. Garnish with the remaining cherries and orange slice.
